NES Artist Residency | July 9 - 19, 2022

SKAGASTRÖND, ICELAND

Skagaströnd

Skagaströnd is a small town located in the Northern part of Iceland, populated with around 500 people. During my time there, I explored the mountains, trails, ocean views and experienced the threatening cry of the Kría (artic tern).

I brought chemistry and paper from Canada and created a small darkroom in the bathroom of my room. I made paper negatives of the surroundings and developed them on-site. At that time of year, Skagi was only getting a few hours of darkness each night. So part of the challenge was limiting the light into my space by shoving dark cloth into the crack of the bathroom door.

artists and friends

NES Artist Residency hosts artists from around the world. I had a chance to get to know some of those artists and others visiting or working in the area. These individuals came from Canada, US, Mexico, South Korea, Qatar and Iceland.

Some of the artists participated in the development process of their portraits. It was an opportunity to share the magic of film.

LAYERED

Part of my explorations included collecting natural items and garbage from my day-to-day experiences. When I returned to Canada, I layered these objects onto the Iceland negs to create something new. The layered creations serve as a daily diary of my travels.
